Lumber Handling Equipment

Revolver Lug Loader

Planermill Revolver Lug Loader ImageThe Newnes-McGehee Revolver Lug Loader is the simplest machine in its class and the fastest board dealer ever built. Revolver uses a unique disc style design. Each revolution of the disc allows six boards to be dealt. At 180 lpm the turning shaft is only operating at 30 RPM, thus wear is kept to a minimum. Revolver is capable of speeds over 200 lpm in Studmill applications.

Revolver uses very few electronic devices and no hydraulics. A quick change belt ensures the boards are fed without skews, misdeals or tumbling. The entire transfer process is very smooth and lumber is handled very gently. Revolver's simplicity ensures low impact installation and start-up, and minimum maintenance.

Revolver is engineered to accommodate a wide range of products.

  • Suitable for retrofit installations
  • Accommodates products from 1x3" to 4x12", and any planermill product mix.
  • Lengths from 4' through 32'
  • Dedicated pre-wired control system
  • Deal/stop ducker system for reliable singulation to suit your application
  • Can accommodate overhead mounted grade mark or tracking mark readers for cut'n'two lug inhibit feature

Grade Stations

Newnes-McGehee offers many different styles of grade stations. Our approach is to evaluate individual mill requirements and custom configure our systems to meet mill needs. Some typical configurations include:

  • Smooth chain grading, with or without optimized pre-grading
  • Lugged chain grading with optional speed assist belts
  • Console or crayon/grade mark reader inputs
  • Powered board turners (forward or back turning) or Shark Fin turners
  • Two level, multi-level or elevated (over the flow) grade stations

We are specialists in lumber handling, and have many working sites where we split flows and combine flows of lumber at very high speeds.

Skip-A-Lug

The Skip-A-Lug system handles cut'n'two grade decisions which occur downstream of the Lug Loader. By generating an empty lug, a single board can be trimmed into two, and the far end can be lifted into the following empty lug space.

Skip-A-Lug has been installed on optimized systems as well as manual grading systems, and on systems which require several slaved drives to perform in harmony.

Cut'N'Two

Cut'N'TwoIn a typical Newnes-McGehee Cut'N'Two System, a grader will mark a board as cut'n'two to be read by the True-Read Grade Mark Reader system. When the True-Read system identifies a board as cut'n'two, the Lug Loader is disabled for one lug space, creating an empty lug space immediately following the cut'n'two board. After the Trimmer, the lumber line end of the board is lifted momentarily and set into the following empty lug space.

Air operated clamp arms are located every 2 feet along the width of the transfer to lift the lumber line end board. High speed systems also use overhead gravity clamps for additional gripping.

Re-Circulation Transfer

Our Recirculation Transfer is another option to consider when generating cut'n'two solutions. Mounted over the ending transfer after the trimmer, a portion of the trimmed board is directed up into a lug chain, while an empty lug is created at the lug loader. The board is blended back into the flow to the sorter when the empty lug arrives at the recirculation transfer.

Ending Rolls

Ending RollsWe pay special attention to rollcases to ensure reliable ending of trimmed boards. Our rollcases are extra long so all boards can be ended to a common lumber line, regardless of saws used and system speeds. Close chain spacing and large diameter roller lugs on machined pins ensure short, bowed and crooked boards are handled as well.

  • Transfers can be configured to accept Cut'N'Two clamps, Grade Stamp Units and Bar code/ink jet systems.
  • Rollcases are serpentine driven from the main Sorter Drive.
  • Roll to shaft connections have Taperlock hubs
  • Long rolls are fabricated using removable stub shafts
  • Ending rollcases include "Silent Bumpers" to absorb ending forces
  • Traction coatings, such as rubber, ceramic grit or sprayed-on urethane are available options.

Timberstar Grade Stamp Printer

Timberstar Grade Stamp PrinterThe Timberstar Grade Printer is a high quality complement to our Planermill grading line of products. We are pleased to offer the Timberstar through a strategic partnering alliance with Timberstar Manufacturing Ltd.

Designed to be reliable, cost efficient and low maintenance, Timberstar Grade Printers have steadily grown in popularity since their launch in 1987.

Timberstar is available in several custom configurations to suit any mill requirements.

Timberstar accurately stamps lumber ½" to 6" thick at the highest production speeds. Custom units can stamp lumber over 6" thick. Easy access is provided for maintenance items and machine adjustments.

Timberstar can be configured for a variety of lug spacings. Printers can also be mounted on inclines or horizontally. Optional end stamping is available, using single or multiple stamps.
